Supplemental Education Services (SES)
If your child’s school is failing to make the grade, and your child is eligible for a free or discounted lunch, you may be eligible to request special tutoring for your child under the federal “No Child Left Behind"Act. The NYS Education Department has qualified BYC to offer your child tutoring in English Language Arts at no expense if you meet the above criteria. To learn more, contact us at 718-325-9484.
Comprehensive After-School Services for Children with Special Needs
Attention Parents! Sometimes children have special needs that are difficult to meet. For children who are learning and emotionally challenged, we offer a comprehensive program of tutoring, mentoring and counseling that is specially designed by our professional staff to help to ensure that children with special needs are not left behind their peers or left to struggle alone with their special challenges. Our goal is to see every child we serve in a mainstream classroom.
After-School Tutoring
Most school programs are designed to educate students as a group. No matter how intelligent you may be, it is easy to fall behind simply because you need extra, individual attention. Our after-school tutoring program is designed to help kids better themselves. We are prepared to provide extra help in all academic areas to ensure that students meet school standards and gain the confidence they need to succeed. We will also work with them to understand and complete homework assignment, helping them to stay on top of their class work.
Mentoring
Life can become a challenge for young people who are struggling to contend with a complex world. We are prepared to provide young people from 5 to 17 with a long-lasting, one-on-one relationship with an adult trained to provide the support and guidance needed for children to succeed. We are particularly proud of our success with young people who are at-risk of dropping out of school, joining a gang, becoming a drug or alcohol abuser, or a teen parent.
Dance
We believe that the best programs are the ones that serve the whole child.
If you are participating in one of our academic programs, you also have the opportunity to master Karate, dance with a member of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, play on one of our “hoops” tournament teams or learn to shoot pool. These are just a few of the opportunities that are on our list AND that list is growing even longer every year!

Burch Dream Institute & Summer Apprenticeships
Although we work hard to prepare our kids to go to college, academic institutions are not the only higher education opportunities available to teens. Students attending the after-school institute are provided with the skills they need to prepare for technology school and to secure a good job. In the summer, qualified students are eligible to take part in a summer apprenticeship program, where they are prepared for and provided with the opportunity to learn what it means to be successful in today’s competitive work environments.

Burch Summer Camp
Named in honor of Ms. Russell’s parents, Burch Summer Camp is one of the most sought after summer experiences available to local children and their parents. Because we’re about education, we work with campers throughout the summer to ensure that they maintain the skills they learned during the school year. Because it’s summer, we also take campers on endless outings that include everything from museums to amusement parks.
During the final week of the program, we also bring our campers on an educational adventure that has taken them as far away from the Bronx as South Carolina, where they have a first-hand opportunity to experience the history of our country and the heritage of African American families. There is, of course, ample opportunity for campers to enjoy the grandeur of the mountains and beaches that are so foreign to life in the Northeast Bronx.
Medical & Social Service Referrals
Above all, it is important that our young people are healthy and protected from the problems that are systemic to the environment in which they live. Are staff is trained to recognize and address problems that may arise, and to provide solutions from resources that are made available to the community, such as health, counseling, legal and social service referrals. We also include information on important health and behavioral matters in our regular program curricula, tackling issues like substance abuse, sexual health, family planning, parenting, gangs and bullies.
