Adult literacy affects many lives.  Approximately 53% of the adult population in the greater Notheast Bronx have low or limited literacy skills and over 48% of this population lacks a high school diploma.

Our program

Baychester Youth Adult Literacy Programs serves approximately 500 students a year through its tuition-free adult literacy program, which pairs adult learners with teachers in small-group settings. Sessions cover reading and writing, as well as basic mathematics skills, and are guided by the adult learner’s personal goals.

For more information on our adult literacy program, call Adult Literacy/GED Program, at 718-325-9484.

Placement and Assessment

All new students and GED applicants must first take the TABE Locator and the TABE exam prior to enrollment for all students and for all applicants before taking the GED exam.

If you have previously taken the GED Exam and failed a particular subject, then you may take the TABE exam on that specific subject only without having to take the entire TABE exam.

Placement and Assessment Exam Dates and Times:

Wednesdays  5:00PM - 7:00PM
Fridays:  1:00PM - 3:00PM

Please bring 2 pencils, some scratch paper and a calculator.  No one will be allowed to take the exam after the end posted times above.  The exam takes approximately 3 hours depending on your educational level.

Student orientation

Learning to read isn’t easy. To give our adult learners the best possible chance for success, we carefully evaluate their needs and help them assess their own strengths before they even begin the learning process. Adult learners new to our program are first interviewed, then given a basic reading, writing and mathematical assessment. For more information

BYC Adult Literary offers a variety of tuition-free adult educational programs and services in reading, English language skills and more. Adults participating in the BYC Adult Literary programs can expect to raise both their education level and their self-sufficiency. Additionally, parents who improve their reading and writing skills will ultimately increase their children’s literacy levels and life opportunities. For more on our tuition-free services and programs, contact Earnestine Russell at

Adult Literacy

BYC Adult Literacy program consists of both one-on-one tutoring and small-group instruction staffed by New York State Licensed teachers.  Participation in this program will give the adult learners the necessary skills to improve their basic reading, writing and mathematics skills.

Adult Literacy Workforce Readiness & Employability Skills Prep

No matter what basic skills or education one has, learning how to assimilate into today’s workplace and its many cultures can be daunting. Many BYC Adult Literary adult learners find a friendly, supportive environment with our innovative English as a Second Language/Adult Literacy Program. Many of our students have employment related goals, but do not have the employability skills needed to find or hold a job in America.  Some must learn how to fill in a job application or create a resume. Others need to develop interviewing skill.  Many adult learners benefit form help in job expectations, critical thinking, and conflict resolution.  Many may also seek information on how to conduct a job search or associated training programs that match their skills.  BYC Adult Literary provides classes with practical, interactive activities that prepare our learners for the current job market.  Our small group instruction ‘opens the doors’ to self confidence, high-esteem, and self actualization.
